A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
