The Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
