Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
